David "Lefty" Schlesinger
Even while traveling over 100,000 miles a year, and I'm never out of contact, unless I choose to be. I live in cyberspace, whether I'm in Santa Cruz, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Seoul, Brussels, Barcelona or London. I'm in regular contact with most of my close friends, few of whom live within a thousand miles of me.
I have a passion for gadgets and technology, and am awed that I carry what would have once been a multi-million-dollar supercomputer in my pocket, and another few in my backpack. I see mobility, location-awareness, social media and other developments coming together and creating a world that we've only glimpsed in science fiction.
It won't be what we imagined: no robot domestics, no flying cars. It will be unexpected and exciting and entertaining. I'm entertained and excited about The Future: I'm in it!
I am a world traveler, still a bit of a hacker, a photographer and fimmaker, a horror movie fan, an amateur futurist, a vaguely diligent would-be speaker of Japanese, a voracious reader, something of an expert in a few obscure writing systems, member #152 of the Denizens of Doom Motorcycle Club, and an afficionado of balistae, arbalests, trebuchets and other siege engines. For answers, many of them truthful, to frequently asked questions about me, as well as an assortment of interesting facts, see here.
“The future is already here, it's just not widely distributed yet.”
—William Gibson
Activities
I blog, produce videos and podcasts, participate in a variety of social media, create digital artwork, work on open source and open source licensing issues, present and appear as a panelist at numerous conferences, watch a lot of samurai and horror movies, and attempt to improve my deficient Japanese. まだ日本語を下手に話せますよ。
My main areas of interest involve how technology is changing, and changing us, particularly the next wave of constantly-connected-and-interacting mobile devices, appliances and objects.
I currently work as (among other things) Director of Open Source Technologies and Director of Social Media for ACCESS Co., Ltd., the leading provider of mobile software in Japan. For more details on my activities and affiiliations, see here.
Speaking
I speak and participate in panels at a lot of conferences. For past appearances, and contact information if you'd like to have me participate in your conference, see here.
Stalk Me!
